Congresswomen Mazie Hirono – Press Releases

  • MaziEmail: October 6, 2010
    Aloha,
Yesterday I had the privilege of attending the White House signing ceremony for legislation that honors the thousands of Japanese-American veterans who served during World War II.

S.1055 grants a Congressional Gold Medal, collectively, to the 100th Infantry Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, and the Military Intelligence Service in recognition of their dedicated service.

D.C. – Congresswoman Mazie Hirono, Senator Inouye, Congressman Mike Honda, Secretary Eric Shinseki, and other Members of Congress join President Barack Obama and WWII Veterans during the signing of the Congressional Gold Medal Bill recognizing Japanese American Veterans of the 442nd, 100th and MIS.
I joined Senator Inouye, a World War II veteran and member of the 442nd, Secretary Eric Shinseki, and a few other Members of Congress to commemorate this special occasion with President Obama. The true guests of honor, though, were the veterans in attendance who represented the units that were recognized:

    • Osamu “Sam” Fujikawa, President of the 100th Infantry Battalion Veterans
    • Grant H. Ichikawa, Member of the Military Intelligence Service during World War II and the Korean War
    • Jimmie Kanaya, World War II Veteran
    • Terry Shima, Member of the 442nd and Executive Director of the Japanese American Veterans Association
    • Yeiichi “Kelly” Kuwayama, Member of the 442nd

    S. 1055 honors some 6,000 World War II veterans. I was proud to speak on the floor in honor of these veterans, many of whom left Hawaii to bravely enlist and serve our country during a time when they faced discrimination at home. Please click here to view my floor statement in support of S. 1055.

In the summer or fall of 2011, the Speaker of the U.S. House will host a ceremony at the U.S. Capitol honoring the 100th, 442nd, and MIS. During the ceremony, the congressional gold medal will be presented to the veterans and their families before it goes to the Smithsonian for permanent display. The U.S. Mint will also produce bronze duplicate medals that will be available for sale around the time that the congressional ceremony will take place.

    Sincerely,

    Mazie K. Hirono
    Member of Congress
    2nd District of Hawaii
