Typical Physical Tasks: Applicants must be physically able to perform, efficiently and effectively, the essential duties of the position, such as: read reports, regulations and court orders; observe inmate activity, behavior and movement; see and recognize inmates at a distance; observe area around the yard and inmate activity from the watch tower; distinguish colors in locating and identifying and testifying on contraband and in inspecting property; listen for unusual sounds which may indicate suspicious activity; clean, load and fire weapons; use handcuffs and leg chains; lock and unlock doors; close gates rapidly in emergencies; perform searches and shakedowns of inmates, their quarters and other areas; restrain/subdue inmates; break up fights between inmates; defend self and others against inmate attack; carry inmates to seclusion room or other locations; chase escaping inmates and participate in manhunts; hold back a crowd; walk and stand prolonged hours; and work double shifts.
