Honolulu, Hawaii – Continuing a tradition of collaboration, the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) begins its fourth year of an incubator style office environment at its Kakaako headquarters on Queen Street. A half dozen nonprofit organizations share professional office space with CNHA, including internet services, telephone systems, and office equipment.
“When we first looked at the concept of shared office space that could meet the needs of multiple nonprofits, it was a little daunting,” said Lilia Kapuniai, CNHA Vice President and Community Services Manager. “Every organization is like a person, with its own style and personality – so the thought of shopping for space and having to think beyond the needs of just ourselves, and the needs of other organizations was very different.”
Taking space “as is” on the corner of Kamakee and Queen Street, CNHA hired local Native Hawaiian firm, the Nakoa Companies, Inc. to renovate the space to create a conference room, a larger training space, combination storage and break room with shower facilities, and multiple offices. Today, nearly 25 staff are located at the 1050 Queen Street location, working for different firms, but sharing the synergy created when people get together.
“We wanted to create efficiencies for CNHA member organizations that have office space needs,” Kapuniai continued. “With seven different organizations, we have one board room instead of seven, which is a huge cost savings for everyone, yet we have the facilities we all need.”
The office sharing arrangements include business and cultural organizations, social justice organizations and sovereignty initiatives, all with a connection to lifting-up Native Hawaiian communities. CNHA members that do not need full time office space are still able to reserve use of any of the meeting rooms or teleconferencing capabilities.
