Fireworks go on sale ahead of New Year’s celebrations
As people gear up for New Year’s, one ritual for many families is stocking up on fireworks.
Fireworks permits are available starting today at numerous locations around the island (see accompanying box).
Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira said that he expects a normal year as to the numbers of people celebrating with fireworks this holiday season.
“Our fireworks auditor has been working with the vendors who are bringing in shipments. There’s no indication that more product is coming in this year, so it’s assumed to be status quo — and based on the economy, it’s maybe a little bit less because people maybe don’t have as much money,” Oliveira said.
Colleen Aina, who owns Pinky’s 5/Eight store in Papaikou, is hoping sales of legal fireworks boom, pardon the pun.
