As the new year quickly approaches and residents begin stocking up on fireworks for the big celebration, fire officials are reminding people to exercise “extreme caution.”
There are still areas around the island that have not recovered from the drought and are extremely dry, and residents are asked to stay away from tall grass and vegetation when setting off fireworks.
Fire Chief Darryl Oliveira also reminded residents to supervise their children while using fireworks, don’t use fireworks when drinking, always have a bucket of water or water hose on hand — in case something goes wrong — and do not set fireworks off in a garage or enclosed area.
