Gov. Neil Abercrombie connected with Lanai residents during an appearance Thursday in Lanai City.

About 150 people reportedly turned out to hear Abercrombie and Lt. Gov. Brian Schatz, who spoke at a late-morning celebration at the island’s ILWU Union Hall.

Four days into his term, Abercrombie made Lanai his second stop on a Neighbor Island tour, after visiting Molokai on Wednesday.

“It was wonderful,” said Lanai City resident Robin Kaye. “It was really special to have them here.”

He said Abercrombie and Schatz spoke about their desire for the new state administration to be less “Oahu-centric” and have greater focus on the Neighbor Islands.

“They both promised in front of the group, ‘We will be back,’ ” Kaye said.

That was a welcome message to the audience, said Kepa Maly of the Lanai Culture and Heritage Center.
