Washington, Jul 1, 2010
Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii), a member of the House Education and Labor Committee, tonight issued the following statement on the House passage of H.R. 4899, the Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2010:
“This bill allocates $10 billion in emergency spending to save hundreds of thousands of teachers from losing their jobs due to local budget shortfalls.
“According to the Hawaii Department of Education, Hawaii’s portion of this allocation will help the state retain 1,098 teaching jobs. Hawaii’s families have already had the unfortunate experience of furlough Fridays. This infusion of federal funding is a critical and necessary investment for our state and our keiki.”
H.R. 4899 now goes before the U.S. Senate.
